Does your Library publish a newsletter for Library employees?
The Iowa State University Library distributes InForm biweekly to
all employees. A new feature, “Reader’s Corner,” highlights
books or authors. Contributions are submitted by Library employees. To
date, the newsletter has featured the following books and authors:
It’s Not Easy Being Green: And Other Things to Consider, a collection
of quotes and stories from Muppets creator, Jim Henson; Lives of Girls
and Women by Alice Munro; author Larry Brown; A Passion for Books by Lawrence
Clark Powell; author Richard Feynman; My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk; and
Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link. The column has proved to be a popular
feature, and it is a good way for employees to share reading interests
with their colleagues.
Standards Center
As part of ongoing renovations in Parks Library, vacant space near
the Reference collection has been converted into a Standards Center. The
Standards Center contains the bulk of the industry standards that are
available in the ISU Library. It houses the ANSI standards filing cabinets,
a series of bookshelves with other sets of standards (such as ASTM), and
a computer workstation.
A standard that has been approved by one organization is often slightly revised, reprinted and/or approved by a national or international organization such as ANSI, ASTM or ISO. These "alternative" standards are often difficult to compare since they tend to not be shelved anywhere near each other. Researchers regularly have difficulty locating industry standards in our collection and we hope that, by creating a separate area for them, the individual standards will be easier to find.
An online user guide to standards has recently been updated and is available on the web at: http://www.lib.iastate.edu/services1/ref/standards.html
Multimedia Production Stations
The Reference area in Parks Library now includes four multimedia
production stations. The stations include two high-end Macintosh and two
high-end Windows systems, which enable users to create media products
like VHS tapes or DVD disks for class projects. Such projects might include
creating a visual portfolio or a project animation, creating/transporting
PowerPoint slides to video and adding a soundtrack to a display, or even
creating an online movie for a class, a conference, or formal presentation.
Bookends Café
ISU Dining's newest cafe, Bookends, will be opening in Parks Library
in mid-November. The café will be located on the first floor, near
the Fireplace Reading Room.
