ILA/ACRL Spring Conference 2007 - Call for Presenation Proposals
Work Worth Doing: The Value of Academic Libraries for the 21st
Century
March 23, 2007 – Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa
Deadline for Receipt of Proposals: December 8, 2006
Pamela Snelson is the 2006-2007 ACRL President and the keynote speaker
for this conference. The focus for her administration is “communicating
the value of academic libraries.” With this theme in mind:
You are invited to submit proposals for presentations to share your “worth”.
Do you have ideas emphasizing the value of library activities to our campus
communities that you would like to share with your colleagues? The conference
theme is intentionally inclusive of all work done in academic libraries.
We hope to receive proposals covering the wide variety of topics so that
the conference will appeal to academic library personnel across the state.
Sessions are one hour and we recommend that presentations be approximately
45-50 minutes with 10-15 minutes for questions.
To submit your proposal, please e-mail the following documents by December
8, 2006 to:
Joyce Meldrem
ILA/ACRL Spring Conference Planning Committee Member
joyce.meldrem@loras.edu
a) one copy of the proposal

The Newsletter Committee produced three issues of the ILA/ACRL Newsletter
in 2006, including the issue you are reading now. A special thanks to
Veronica McAsey for taking over the duties of Chair for the November issue
of the ILA/ACRL Newsletter. We were very successful in gathering information
from many ILA/ACRL libraries about marketing activities for the March
issue. July focused on the Spring ILA/ACRL Conference held in Iowa City
and the November issue focused on the ILA Annual Conference in Council
Bluffs.
The time commitment and contribution by each committee member was tremendous:
gathering information about marketing activities, attending sessions at
both the ILA/ACRL and ILA conferences and writing up reviews of these
sessions, and collecting news from Iowa’s academic libraries! My
greatest thanks go to them as well as to those who contributed their library’s
news and other information.

Nominating Committee
Jean Donham (Chair), Cornell College, 2006
Betsy Gardner, Southeastern Community College, 2007
Kathy Magarrell, University of Iowa, 2006
Linda Nelson, Scott Community College, 2007
Janalyn Moss, University of Iowa, 2007
The Nominating Committee worked together to identify candidates for both elected offices and committee appointments. What a committee! All slots were filled. Of course, we had considerable help as a result of receiving 13 volunteer forms from members stepping forward to offer their services to Iowa-ACRL. Brett Cloyd accepted chair responsibilities for Spring Conference Planning Committee, and in September he and his committee members began making plans for the 2007 spring conference in Grinnell. Because this particular committee needs to be formed and active well before January, the executive board supported an informal adjustment in start date for this committee, and the committee has begun work in order to have adequate time fore effective planning. Deadline for return of ballots will be Monday, October 30.
Report Submitted by Jean Donham, 2006 Chair
The sessions at the fall conference went well. The speaker and panel participants were great and I wish we could have spent more time on the topic. I also want to thank the committee members who worked on the topic: Polly Mumma, Des Moines Area Community College; Sandra Kiest, Grandview College; Elizabeth Schau, formerly of Cornell College; and William Weare, formerly of Central College.

ACRL
Chapters Council Representative
National ACRL allows local chapters to be reimbursed for educational or charitable expenses. This is a change from previous years in that we normally would use this money to pay for costs associated with the printing and mailing out of the print directory. This year, we donated $189 to the Leadership Institute with our national ACRL funds.
The Iowa Chapter ACRL logo was distributed this year although we will
keep our current logo to reflect our relationship with the Iowa Library
Association.
Kathy Parsons was elected Chair Elect of the Chapters Council! Congratulations
to Kathy!
ACRL also offers opportunities for the ACRL Board to visit chapters.
This is an option that can only be taken advantage of every three years.
Since a visit to Iowa was last made in 2002, we are again eligible to
invite one the ACRL Board members to visit Iowa and speak at a conference.
Pam Snelson, current ACRL President, has been invited to speak at the
ILA/ACRL Spring Conference in 2007 and her visit will be funded in part
through this ACRL Officers Speakers Bureau.
Another item of future interest is the University Libraries Section's
Advocacy Toolkit. This is available via the web at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlissues/marketingyourlib/marketingyour.htm.
Chapters will soon be invited to submit a grant proposal for up to $500
to fund a speaker dealing with this subject.
