ILA/ACRL is sponsoring a pre-conference on succession planning and mentoring at this year’s ILA Annual Conference on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Registration is $30 for members ($40 for nonmembers) - Registration

 
Succession Planning and Mentoring for All Libraries; Judith Nixon & Erla Heyns, Purdue University; In this workshop we will break Succession Planning down into its component parts, Organizational Culture, Mentoring, and Professional and Personal Development and how these work together to facilitate succession planning for both the library organization and the individual librarian.  Understanding organizational cultures will include a brief review of the statistics on supply and demand for librarians; changes in organizational culture effecting librarianship; emerging needs such as digital scholarship; and generational differences and expectations.  The portion on mentoring will include a brief review of various types of mentoring and how mentoring compares with role models.  Throughout the workshop there will be interactive sessions to involve attendees in the process. The workshop will conclude with some suggestions for personal steps attendees can take to prepare for leadership roles in libraries. The workshop will be relevant to all types of libraries, but especially academic and public libraries.
